2nd Annual Bronco APP-a-thon – Students gather to build the best mobile app

BSU Bronco App-a-thon

This Sunday, March 10th, wrapped up the 2nd Annual Bronco App-athon – a 2-day coding contest organized by the Office of Information Technology, College of Business and Economics and the College of Engineering at Boise State University.

The APP-a-thon attracted aspiring student programmers, designers and software developers to compete in the 2nd Annual Boise State Bronco App-a-thon.  Fueled by adrenalin, Monster Energy Drinks or Mountain Dew and a drive to create the most innovative, student related, technically rich mobile app student teams worked to create the best mobile app in 48 hours.

18 teams in all gathered Sunday afternoon to present the mobile apps they created over the weekend.  They were judged on technical complexity, relation to student life or social impact, usability and “WOW” Factor.

The students came to impress with apps ranging from knitting apps, binary and hex code converters, Windows 8 Games, Google Maps integrated apps and more. Most students worked in teams. But one lone entrant Daniel De La Garza, comprised the one-man team, Tuxedo Penquin. He developed a “photo hunt” app that was designed to guide users to a landmark based on a photo embedded with GPS data. The winning team, APPathetic, comprised of Han Park, Jennifer Parke, Roger Perez and Colin Smith won the title of Best App with their mobile app IntelliClick. Their mobile app provides a replacement for “Clickers” in the classroom enabling student presenters to instantaneously poll attendees using their SmartPhones.

We were pleased to join judges from Black Fin, Boise Cascade, MetaGeek, JLC Mobile, Z Studios, Cradle Point, TimeGlider and White Cloud Analytics.

It was great to see innovative mobile ideas come to fruition in such a compacted time-frame.  Kudos to all the participants!

Here is a list of all the teams and the apps they created. http://oit.boisestate.edu/appathon/2013-teams-and-apps/

We look forward to sponsoring the Bronco APP-a-thon next year.
